Theories as to where the Beasts came from is that they may have escaped from Roman circuses, from menageries of exotic animals which were popular in medieval times right up to the 19th century, or were released from private zoos when the Dangerous Wild Animals Act came into force some years ago, which required exotic animals to have a Licence.

"This big cat skull (left) was found by a farmer in Devon in 2005 - was it from a leopard skin rug or one of the many Beasts which farmers say are roaming the hills and eating their sheep?"

Police Wildlife and Environmental Crime Officer Mark Robson says that spotting such a beast will always be quite rare, and they currently pose no real risk to the public.

"They will see and smell you before you get near them. You have to be really, really unlucky to get that close to put yourself in danger," he said.

Wildlife Parks and Farmers have reported sightings, spoor prints and other evidence of big cats in many parts of the country including North Cornwall.
